I'm not saying that from the ashes of captivity, never has a Phoenix metaphor been more personified.

I really don't like when people say, "It's okay to ----, but ----." Because that basically means that the thing they say is okay really isn't okay.  Irritating.  Consider the following:
"It's okay to have a reaction, but we need to contextualize."
=
"You shouldn't have expressed an opinion about the yellow face of The Good Earth and instead should have considered how awesome it is and because of its time, it's an acceptable movie."

Has anyone reading this read Pearl Buck's The Good Earth or seen the film adaptation? Originally Anna May Wong was supposed to star in it but they gave the leading female role to Luise Rainer, who is a good actress in her own right, but she played the part in yellow face.  The only reason for contextualizing this film is to see why people enjoyed the thing at the time.  I'm sure anyone who saw it today would be really disturbed by the YELLOW FACE.  I myself really can't get over it.  Look at it:
Really?! REALLY?!

In better, other news....the fall TV show season is starting.  This week I watched Chuck, Law & Order: SVU, and Glee (even though to be very honest I hate Glee....I only watch it so I can insult it later.  Gawd I would punch Rachel in the face).  Mike Chang and Tina Cohen-Chang got together.  Asians getting with Asians? Well, to be fair, except not really because this isn't particularly valid, Tina did say, "That's racist!" before rushing off and holding hands with Mike Chang.  This could go one of two ways:
1. Artie somehow wins over Tina again and then it is expressed that a white guy, even a handicapped white guy, is more desirable than the super sexy Asian (Chinese) that is Harry Shum Jr.
2. Tina and Mike stay together, thereby perpetuating the stereotype that Asians are insular and only get with each other, which even then isn't very accurate.
